School of MediaHIGH DEFINITION – HIGH EXPECTATIONS SYMPOSIUM AND DIGITAL CONVERGENCE SYMPOSIUM THURSDAY 11TH MAY 2006 SCHOOL OF MEDIA The
School of Media at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth has a range of
courses dedicated to giving students both the theoretical and the
practical skills needed to succeed in their chosen industries. The
wealth of talent we have at the Institute is reflected in the awards we
have won, and the internationally renowned graduates we have produced,
who have gone on to achieve exceptional success within their chosen
industries. They include: - Simon Beaufoy,
the writer, producer and director who graduated from the Institute in
1992. He won five international film festival awards with his student
production ‘Release Me’, before coming to prominence when he wrote the
script for ‘The Full Monty’.
- Suri Krishnamma,
the writer and director, whose student film won him a nomination for
the Best Short Film at the BAFTA’s in 1987. He has directed many film
and TV productions including ‘A Man of No Importance’ and the 2003
version of ‘Wuthering Heights’.
- Sara Sugarman, the director of notable British and American films such as ‘Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen’ and ‘Mad Cows’.
- Steve Aplin,
the animator and modelmaker, who has worked on a number of prominent
films including the ‘Star Wars Trilogy’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of
Fire’.

In
2005, Bournemouthwas designated a Skillset Screen Academy Centre of
Excellence in conjunction with BournemouthUniversityMediaSchool. The
Screen Academy network is endorsed by the UK film industry as providing
the best education and skills development for the future workforce at a
further, higher and postgraduate level. Prior to that, we were awarded
the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for our outstanding work in the fields of
film, television and animation. Our range of media courses include: BA (Hons) Film Production:Lights,
Camera, Action! This production-based course aims to generate highly
skilled film graduates who will pursue key creative and
business-related careers in the mainstream sectors of the British and
International Film industries. The reputation of the course speaks
volumes: in 2005, the course was recognised by Skillset and the UK Film
Council as a key component of the Bournemouth Screen Academy. Prior to
that, it was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize in
recognition of its exceptional work and achievement of the highest
standards. BA (Hons) Graphic Design:This
stimulating course offers a unique opportunity for students to learn
about and explore Graphic Design both as a means of communication and a
method of self expression. It aims to foster confident and informed
designers who are able to make decisions in complex and unpredictable
contexts, and who react quickly to new information, changes in
situations and advances in technology. Students from this course have
done very well in national design competitions and awards such as the
Design &Art Direction (D&AD) Awards, International Society of
Typographic Designers (ISTD) and Young Creatives Network (YCN) BA (Hons) Animation Production:This
highly acclaimed, practical and stimulating course offers students a
thorough experience in which they will develop a comprehensive
understanding of the full production process. The course continues to
reach the highest standards and has international industry recognition;
it has received numerous prestigious awards and students’ work is
screened each year at animation festivals in the UK, China, Japan,
Europe and the Americas. Students’ work is of exceptional standards and
recent employers of our graduates include Industrial Light and Magic,
Dreamworks, Electronic Arts and Aardman Animation. BA (Hons) Photography:
This is a creative, exciting and challenging degree course, which
promotes photography in a contemporary context and offers image-making
possibilities over a broad range of practices, promoting the
opportunity to explore the boundaries between fine art and commercial
photography. We encourage students to bring their own experiences,
interests and aspirations to the course, and individual creativity is
encouraged and supported. Our students attain a high level of success
in a broad range of creative industry careers, including fashion and
commercial photographer, photo-journalists, photographic artists,
curators, teachers and film and video makers. BA (Hons) Acting for Theatre, Film and Television:
This course provides students with the confidence, skills, expertise
and theoretical knowledge to enable them to work in this profession. It
is a highly practical and demanding course, which concentrates on the
exploration of realism in acting for theatre, film and television and
non-realistic forms becoming more demanding. Supported by an Industry
Liaison Group, students on this course work with students from the film
course, putting their real acting abilities to the test. There are a
number of textually demanding productions required of the students,
with the aim of providing acting challenges similar to those faced by
actors in the profession. FDA Interactive Media:
This course is closely linked to industry, and teaching is through live
projects and placements. Students learn about up and coming
developments, basing projects on new technologies using a combination
of practical skills, conceptual thought and commercial awareness;
producing creative and practical solutions to real and complex
problems. Students look at areas such as streaming to mobile phones and
small hand held devices or PCs, considering the design and interfaces
as well as the products themselves. Students are able to respond to
changing technologies while simultaneously developing them.
FdA Commercial Photography:This
degree offers a focused course for creative thinkers who have the goal
of becoming successful professional photographers and who want to push
the boundaries of this industry. Students learn a range of fundamental
photographic and image making technical processes, including digital
imaging, theoretical concepts and historical aspects of photography.
They undertake a range of project work, all theme based, relevant to
contemporary commercial practice and take part in a work placement to
gain relevant practical experience. Students from the Institute have
won a number of awards including the Fuji Awards for Fashion
Photography, the Independent Magazine Fashion Awards and the Metro
Imaging Awards. More information will be available soon
