award winning short film, ‘Still Life’ is being screened at the
Symposium. Telling the story of Oliver Kane’s life as a Crime Scene
Photographer in war-torn London, Oliver’s life takes an unlikely twist,
when his photographs reveal ghostly undertones, dragging Oliver down a
completely different path through his work. Harry will be
answering questions on ‘Still Life’ and his industry experience after
the film’s screening, offering tips for new undergraduate filmmakers. 11am - 11.45am: Becky Waters - 'Girls on Film'A
exploratory talk on women in industry, Becky will be detailing her own
experiences within Double Negative, charting her successful career in
balance with family life. 12pm - 12.45pm: Oliver Irving and Justin Kelly – ‘How to Be...’Oliver
Irving(director) and Justin Kelly (producer) will give an overview of
their film-making experiences, talking in particular about their
current project; ‘How to Be’ (a £500,000 dark comedy about self help
and how to be). They will explain the processes required for a
successful production, from gathering a team together; scheduling;
budgeting; marketing and drafting a business plan to raising the
necessary finance, giving a thorough insight into the world of film. Oliver’s short film ‘New World’ will also be screened. 2pm - 2.30pm: Professor Bob Cotton - 'Designing in the Digital Forum'A
discussion into design within the digital age, focusing on all types of
new media, exploring the key issues confronting practitioners with the
emergence of digital convergence. 2.45pm - 3.45pm: Adam Woolfitt – ‘Circles of Confusion’Adam
will be talking about his work, highlighting some of the pictures he
has taken, in particular explaining about some alternative ways of
shooting rotational panoramas. 2.45pm - 3.45pm: Bob Marchant - 'Digital Photography - Anorak Hell or Creative Heaven?' 'The survivors guide to sailing the digital sea' Bob
will be looking at the pleasures and possible pitfalls of digital
capture in today's working environment, including how dealing with the
technical stuff liberates the creative process. The talk will be broken down into four main areas: - Understanding the process. - Keeping control of the image. - The creative resource - using the knowledge to bend the rules. - Keeping above water - the economics of going digital. 4pm - 4.30pm: Ian Chisholm - 'Digital Intermediate'Digital
Intermediate refers to movie post production where all information is
handled as computer data. Ian will look at DI workflow with particular
reference to the new BKSTS wall chart, and will talk about image
quality and colour management. 4.30pm - 5.15pm: Professor Mitch Mitchell - 'Where The Digits Are Taking Us'A
synoptic and informative history of the development of film technology,
and a realistic consideration of the impact that new developments will
have in the not-too-distant future. (The influence of HD, CGI, digital
distribution and projection etc. on the film industry of the 21st
Century)
